Know what this is?

Need a better look? How’s this?

Oh, you scotch keeners know it’s a quaich. And if I’m not too far from wrong, you can spell it without checking What’s Under the Kilt and pronounce it with a confident little lilt. (It’s pronounced “kway-kh” for those, like me, who weren’t sure.)

This is a traditional Scottish whisky drinking cup, used for both welcome and farewell drinks. Although Andrew won’t be using it quite yet, he thought he’d dust it off and give it a polish in time for the grand cask opening.

Now, I know you trivia buffs are just aching to tell someone the original quaichs were wooden, not metal. I’m skipping a lot of the history, but thought I’d give you a chance to shine in the comments section. So, here goes. The quaich handles have a special name. What are they called?

Post your answers and feel free to drop in a few historical tidbits or a story or two while you’re at it.

The barrel has turned and now it’s over to you…
