Restaurant Purse Hanger

06 May Restaurant Purse Hanger

DSC00727.jpg

When I saw this in the shop, the design caught my eye. I didn’t know what it was, but I knew I wanted one. I can be like that.

After a few minutes of spinning the painted enamel disk round and round on its arm, I was informed it was a purse hanger. Or in this case a “Handbag Hook” by Ganz.

A what?

DSC00726.jpg

A purse hanger. For when you go out to restaurants.

Still with me? I didn’t get it either, until it was demonstrated. Instead of putting your purse on the floor you hang your handbag from this hook at the side of your table. The disk has a soft rubber padding and grips the table, the arm acts as a hook and the weight of your purse holds it in place. Now that’s a practical application of basic physics.

When you’re done, the entire piece folds flat again and can be slipped into its carrying sac, so it won’t catch on anything. The whole package goes back into your purse where it takes up hardly any room and is ready for your next trip to the cafe, pub, library or meeting. Neat. All this for about $12.

And just in time for Mother’s Day.

My only complaint is the carrying bag provided is black velvet. Like I’ll be able to see that inside a dark purse. Couldn’t they have made it in material to match the fancy design? No?

Hmmm. I don’t sew. But Mom does. Wonder if she’d mind making her own purse hanger bag?

Anyone have a version of this? If so, do you like it? If not, would you use one?

I wonder what the maximum weight of the purse is…I carry my life in my purse. I have a small child, after all. Crayons? Wipes? Bandaid? Snack? Mascara? Lipstick? I got you covered…

I got one from my mom as art of a birthday present a few years ago. I’ll admit sometimes I forget to bring it if I’ve switched purses, but it works really well, especially if the chair is rounded and I can’t hang my purse on it…I have a real aversion to putting it on the floor and would rather have it in my lap if I don’t have some place to put it :)

How big is that thing? It’s beautiful, but my purse, unlike Divas, is a glorified wallet on a string. I clip my keys to it because they don’t fit inside.

I think that hanger’s too chic for me. Plus, if my purse weren’t on my lap, I’d DEFINITELY forget it, and then the restaurant would get not only my cash but my pretty purse hanger as well.

Diva, I have a large purse and the hook holds it quite well. I’d say it can take a good 10 to 15 pounds.

Tara, switching purses is the bane of my existence! My purse is too big for my lap (it’s more an open briefcase) and after I read a report about the germs women’s purses pick up by being set on the floor? I’m taking this thing everywhere!

Cheryl, the head is 1 1/2 inches in diameter and the whole thing end to end is just shy of 5 inches. It lies very flat. I hear you about forgetting a small purse. I once had a one like you describe and my lap was the best place. As I said to Tara, my current one is too big.

Interesting the various opinions! Keep ’em coming.

I had the exact same reaction to these…not exactly sure what they were, but they were pretty and i wanted one : )

I have yet to buy one, but if they’re getting a favorable review, maybe now i will.

$12 to hang your purse off a table? Sounds crazy to me. I hang my purse off the chair. It’s free.

Anonymous #1, glad I’m not the only one attracted to shiny things.

Anonymous #2, you’re right, chair backs are free. It’s not a must-have item. I didn’t balk at the price, especially for a gift to a friend. But I nearly choked when I saw a version online for — get this — $349!

Fpr $349 you can probably pay the hostess and half the waitstaff to stand by your chair and hold your purse themselves.

    Cheryl, you can DO that?!

I also wondered what kind of purse one would hang from it. I don’t think my coat, purse and shoes combined come to that much.

Nice but it looks kinda light weight. I’ve been to a few restaurants that have purse stools that they pull up to the table – love those!

And, I encouraged my husband to add hooks under the bar at his restaurant so that people can hang their purses out of site and up off the floor.

Dana, I’ve never seen a purse stool but LOVE the idea. I’m glad you encouraged your husband to put hooks under his restaurant’s bar. There would be no call for purse hooks between these two solutions.

Yes, I have one! Though yours is much prettier. I think its useful enough to warrant the extra weight in my already heavy purse. I don’t like to put my bag on the floor and its not really safe to leave it on the back of a chair – not in NYC anyway – so I love mine and use it all the time.

i love purse hangers! my sis gave them as bridesmaids gifts and i use it all the time. it’s a little different – the hook wraps around the circle and then slips in a tiny pouch.

i hate putting my bag on floors. do you ever think about all the germs you are picking up? fecal matter has been found on tested bags. that’s poop people!! i’ll pass on the poop purse, thank you.

I always carry a big bag and love my purse hanger. I don’t like hanging my bag off the back of the chair. I prefer to have it hanging off the table next to me. Mine is very similar to this one and I’ve gotten tons of compliments on it and people remark what a great idea it is. I bought one for each of the great women on my x-mas list last year and each and every one was thrilled.

I have one. I got it at Nordstroms for $13 and I love it! Stein Mart also carries them. The round part has peridot colored crystals in the design of a crown. I find mine really handy. When in a bathroom stall and the hook is broken off, I put the hook part of the purse hanger over the door and hang my purse from the round part (Think using it upside down) My model holds 30 pounds, but if my purse actually weighed 30 pounds, I’d be in trouble!

Dive on a Diet, you’re right about the safety issue. A friend had her handbag stolen from the back of her chair and I’ve been a bit antsy about that ever since.

Marsha, the hygiene issue is jaw dropping. Apparently the fecal matter gets picked up from bathroom floors where women always end up setting their purses — which then get up on counters, dinner tables… ick!!!

Anonymous, Christmas gifts? I think I just solved what to get some of the hard-to-buy-for women in my social circle.

R- peridot is one of my favourite colours. I’m now officially jealous. Great idea of using it in the bathroom stall (See comment to Martha). Quite often there isn’t a hook and I’ll use your idea next time. Also good to know that these puppies can hold enough weight to satisfy Divawrite’s needs :-)

Thanks to all for the great feedback.

I got my leopard print purse hanger from Hang Accessories. Their website is http://www.hangaccessories.com they don’t show all of their products there so I would check out their myspace at myspace.com/hangaccessories, they have a lot of different designs. My purse hanger is super tiny (it fold up) and can hold my giant MJ bag. I totally freaked out too when I heard about all the germs a bag collects-I wish I’d heard about these earlier!

Alex, thanks for the link. I used my hanger last night and someone said, “oh, are they back in style again?” Apparently, these were hot in the 60s. Who knew?

I have actually senn these for much cheaper, and now I am even finding ones in the Dollar Store.

The first time I actually tried one was when I took my best friend to the Wedding Show to look for some vendors. As the MOH it was my job to collect all of the brochures and by the end of the day I had one plastic bag that could have easily weighed 20 lb with samples and brochures. The exhibitor took my bag from me and hung it on one of the purse holder and it held!! I couldn't believe it. Now these ones were more than $20.00 bu they were also made out of hand blown glass and were very ornate. I love mine and we are even giving these away at the bridal shower to all of the guests as favors.

Anonymous, I love the idea of giving these away as bridal shower gifts. I haven't seen them in the dollar store and am not sure I would trust them to hold 20 pounds, but I really like mine and don't regret the money I spend on it.

Thanks so much for sharing your story!

      @Christie’s Corner,
      Hi Christie,
I’ve been looking for the purse hangers by Ganz all over and I can’t find them!
I know it is almost a year since you shared this but could you tell me where you found the one you have?
      Thank you so much!

@Sarah, how very frustrating! I wish I could be more helpful but, unfortunately, I got my purse hanger at an independent gift shop that closed in January. Have you tried contacting the manufacturer to see who carries them in your area?

        Good luck with your search.

    Hi Christie,

I hope you don’t mind my post but this is in answer to Sarah who is looking for a Handbag Hook by Ganz. I just started carrying them in my on-line store and I have a very nice selection of them. I even have beautiful ones with mirrors inside (the disc flips open)! My site is http://www.pursebling.com and I offer free shipping in the US.

Great article by the way, I totally agree that a purse hook is the safest, cleanest way to store your bag at a restaurant. There is also an old wives’ tale that says that when you put your purse on the floor the money runs out of it! Probably all the money you use on Dr. bills when you get ill from the germs! LOL!
