A blog by any other name…

stupid.jpg

Right now I’m lying in bed feeling sorry for myself. I’ve a cold that hits in waves. One minute I’m fine, the next I feel like I have cotton balls stuffed up my nose and swallowed a wad of steel wool. If it weren’t for a laptop, this post wouldn’t be going up today. But I have a new Mac and really feel I should use it, even if my brain and fingers aren’t on speaking terms. Let’s hope I don’t regret this decision.

Due to my mopey disposition of late, I’ve cooked nothing interesting to show you. I’ve done nothing but blow my nose and complain, which I’ve already covered. [See paragraph above for disturbing details.] So, what’s there to talk about?

I’d like to take this opportunity to clarify a consistent point of reader confusion. My name.

And it’s all my fault.

Allow me to walk you through a typical email correspondence / chat.

Hi Christie!
Hi XX, [Fascinating email response goes here.] All the best, Charmian.

Charmian?! Sorry, I thought your name was Christie.
Close. My LAST name is Christie. My first name is Charmian.

Sorry about that Charmaine.
No problem. Everyone gets it wrong. But my name is spelled Charmian. Like, “Charm Ian”. Lucky Ian!

That’s an unusual / pretty / nice [ridiculous] name. How do you say it?
It’s pronounced SHAR-mee-ann.

Charmian? Is that French?
No. According to the baby books, it’s Greek. It means “Little Joy.”

Are you Greek?
No.

At this point I try to get back to the topic from which we wildly veered. I want to avoid the next question. Yes, there is a story of how my parents came up with my name, but it’s a bit long and has nothing to do with food, so I’ll skip it.

The one question everyone is too polite to ask is: If your name is Charmian, why the $%^& did you name your blog Christie’s Corner?

I know it’s confusing. I started the blog on a whim and named it without thinking things through. I’d no idea anyone who didn’t know me would actually read it. If I had to do it all over again, I’d think of something funny and clever. Like these people did.

See, these are good names.

In light of my dissatisfaction, I’ve created a poll so you can weigh in on the issue. If you have suggestions for a new name (for the blog, not me) or know of other food blogs with great names, drop me a note in the comments.

All the best,
Charmian

PS: That Creme Brulee book is still up for grabs!

Charmeene, I’m sorry you’re sick, I really, really am, but this post has me smiling from ear to ear. You’re funny when you’re healthy, but you’re especially funny when you’re bedridden.

I’m going to think of new blog names and get back in touch.

    Thanks, Christie!

Now I feel stupid – where is the poll?

  3. Christie's Corner February 24, 2009 at 3:43 pm #

    Thanks Share-ill. :-0

Dana, the poll is on the left. I’ll move it to the top left so it’s more obvious.

Charm Ian. My dad is Ian. He’ll be pleased.

My name is Jillian. Not Jullian. Or Gillian. How ofter do I send an email, signing my name Jillian, and receive a reply addressed to Gillian.

    At least I’m getting replies.

Now back to bed. I didn’t get my flu shot this year. While I recover I’ll think up some brilliant blog names.

    –Jill, Jillian or jj

Sorry you are sick!! I resent that you can still be so smart when you are down with a bug. You top the sty in my eye, but that is my excuse for not having come up with a new name for the blog. I’ll just pretend I’m resistant to change and not that I have no clever ideas.
    Hang tough.
    Love,
    Robin

You had me LOL with your post, it was that funny. Charmian. Will try to remember. When I read your blog through Google’s reader, your email address is right there, visible. With the charmian.christie. But it’s isn’t totally clear that it’s a first and last name, I suppose. I will say that changing your url is a bit of a pain, though. Probably not worth the hassle (having done it). What about just putting a clarification under your photo instead? Whatever you do, I’ll still be reading your blog. Thanks for the fun one, and hope you feel better soon.

I’ve grown fond of your blog’s name. (And never, EVER touch that terrific tagline. That’s the best.)

I guess if you felt like you had to change it, you could call it “Christie Corner,” but then editors and other visitors might think you have a really big typo right there in the title. :)

And you know what? Maybe I feel a little bit “in the know” as a regular reader who knows your name isn’t Christie–or Charmaine.

Feel better! I think we have the same thing. Do germs travel via Internet connection?

We have the crud here too, going on 2 weeks now. Feel better.

  9. Christie's Corner February 25, 2009 at 2:50 pm #

JJ – I hear you loud and clear.

Robin, a sty?! No fun. At least I can see.

Carolyn T, glad you found it amusing. My name is above my profile photo on the site, but I don’t think people look at it because it’s small. Interesting point about my email address in the reader.

Carolyn E, thanks for the feedback. I won’t change the tagline, promise!

Roxanne, sorry you’ve got this ridiculous cold, too. Speedy recovery to us all!

I just got here, but I think you should keep your name, rather your *blog’s* name. Heck, why not keep both?! LOL

I think its charming and not the least bit confusing. And, I hope you’re feeling better.

I love the name please don’t change I always think of the “corner” on Christie’s crackers an cookies…and you have the “corner” of the best blog so ot goeshand in hand …or hand in overmitt!

  13. Christie's Corner March 3, 2009 at 2:02 pm #

Diva, thanks for your well wishes. I am finally feeling better. Phew. Thought this cold would NEVER end.

Anonymous — I’m intrigued that you drew the parallel between the corner on the cookies and crackers and the blogs name. Very impressive visual connection. Regardless of the reasoning, most voters are siding with you, Diva and the others who say keep the name.
