Belated Valentine’s Day

Belated Valentine’s Day

There’s a great series of Bud Light mock greeting cards. My favourite reads “Let’s make February 15th our Valentine’s Day.”

It’s February 16. I’m not late. I’m just feeling somewhat rebellious and not particularly romantic. No flowers, bon bons, cards, cinnamon hearts or dinners out for us. Andrew and I exchanged greetings and went on with our day. Heck, I didn’t even buy these candies. I borrowed them from my sister.

I’d planned on taking a few shots and then giving them back, but it turns out they make great cat toys. Spend $7.98 on a catnip squeaking mouse and your felines walk away. But dump $1.37 worth of cheap candy on the floor? Playtime!

As I shot these, I noticed now many of the standard Valentine pleas have changed. When I was a kid they said things like, “Be Mine” or “True Love.” These days the messages read, “You Rock”and “Page Me”. Page me? I was lucky to get 10 minutes on the telephone. What’s next? Tweet Me? Text Me? Ping Me?

Despite the updated messages, these candies still taste like sugar-infused chalk. Never liked them. Still don’t. I guess some things never change.

Now that the media pressure is off me to post about Valentine’s Day, and I can flagrantly ignore the fact it’s Family Day here in Ontario, I’m curious. How has Valentine’s Day changed for you over the years?

Well, my brother was visiting from out of town, and due to an odd request and a sick child, we ended up getting take-out fast-food burgers and bringing them home. I can’t remember this ever happening in my house — ever! — but I’ve got to tell you I think it was my husband’s best Valentine’s Day ever.

A twisted take on romance, to be sure.

Geez, Cheryl. Will you keep it down? Andrew might hear you. Those burgers or KFC would be his ideal Valentine’s dinner, too.

You know what I miss? I miss that my son is too old to make Valentine’s cards for everyone in his class. Although when he was little I did most of the work, it was kinda fun. Now that he’s all blase about the whole thing, I miss it!

We did the Valentine’s Day thing on Sunday. My husband made me heart shaped french toast for breakfast. And we had chocolate fondue for dessert after supper. Besides that, everything else was a normal weekend. (We are always fun and romantic.) LOL.
