05 Dec Gifts for Cooks — Mini Whisk

Earlier I promised a gift that a child could afford. The tiny whisk on the bottom right comes in at less than $1.00. It’s cute, it’s compact and it’s amazingly useful.

These baby whisks are irresistible. Last year I received three for Christmas. While I only use one at a time, they do come in handy. In lieu of a fork, they can beat eggs for French toast, whisk marinades or stir up some creme fraiche. This morning?

I whipped up some rum-spiked icing for my Egg Nog Cookies. (I’ll post the recipe next week.)

Sure, you can get through life without a miniature whisk, but it’s small, inexpensive and gives an air of authenticity a fork or spoon just can’t.

So if your kids ask what you want for Christmas, this is something they can afford and you might actually use. Available at kitchen stores and the kitchen section of many department stores, these won’t send you out of your way either.

Do you have any low-cost culinary items you’d care to share?

I’m sorry, did you ask a question? All I see are eggnog cookies, floating like little fairies in my brain.

Yes, I love cute, little skewers. You can get them at party stores (I guess they’re officially called party picks), and they really dress up an hors d’oeuvre. Cheap, too. I got 100 small but elegant bamboo ones for $2.

Those cookies look delicious! (and sound good too!) Can’t wait for the recipe! Rum-spiked icing! Yummm!

Dollar store. Silicone brush. Great for many brushing tasks. Easy to clean. Love em.

A foodie acquaintance has a pair of earrings that look like even mini-er whisks! But this is cute and I’ll bet even useful.

With the way the economy is going, everyone on my Christmas list might be getting these whisks as presents!

Another good dollar store find are those plastic chargers that can be used to hold baked goods that you want to give to a friend for Christmas.

Cheryl, be patient. I’ll post about cookies soon :-) Those little party picks are a great idea!

Debbie – the rum icing is (hic) good… Like the idea of the silicon brush. And you’re right. They do clean up very easily.

Claire, I now have earring envy. I love this idea. Foodie jewellery?! I bet whoever invented it is making a fortune.

Dana, it’s hard to find gifts on a budget that are useful and pretty, but your suggestion hits both. Good call!
