Out of ideas

I’ve written and rewritten this post a dozen times. I had too many things to talk about and nothing to say.

Having already paid tribute to The American Election on Accidental Hedonist earlier today, I wasn’t sure what to post here. I know from all the Facebook status lines and constant Twitter updates that my American friends are optimistic, pessimistic, anxious and relieved — all at the same time. But as one commenter said, she didn’t feel much like cooking.

The extended build up to today’s vote reminds me of being a child on Christmas morning. I knew when I went downstairs my stocking would be full, but would it burst with candies or lie heavy with coal? While all children will agree on what constitutes candy and what constitutes coal, I’m not so sure voters have such unified definitions.

But I digress…

Keeping in mind this is a food blog, I toyed with launching a new poll or campaigning for your vote later in the month at the Canadian Blog Awards. But I think Canadians and Americans have had enough of ballots and persuasive arguments — at least for today.

So I paced and muttered, wrote and deleted. And just when I thought I would give up, life handed me an answer.

DSC05916.JPGNothing clears away distraction like a can-opener-related incident. That’s tomato paste all over the coffee carafe. The opener’s was sent straight to the garbage and my cuss words have landed me on Santa’s Naughty List. No CNN analysis needed.

Yup. Real life. It ain’t always pretty.

No way you’re on Santa’s naughty list. Kick back, have some nice coffee and a pastry, or better yet, some chocolate.

Ah yes, can openers. They’re right up there with toasters and non stick frying pans in my list of evils. Doesn’t matter how expensive they are…they’re all crap.
And yeah, what with American Idol, Canadian federal election, Nova Scotia Municipal election and the US election…I’m about voted/CNNed out. But it’s all good. Well, except the Canadian federal part. MY MP got in and that was great, but I vote we vote for prime minister separately, like the US does.

Nothing cures writer’s block like wine and cheese!

Speaking of wine, my kitchen ceiling has red wine all over it. My husband opened a bottle with a bum cork last week and in trying to push the cork INTO the bottle (after failing to get it out), somehow, somehow, he exerted such pressure that when the cork finally went in it created a geyser. I really need to scrub it off, come to think of it.

Hmm. My comments didn't come through. Something about "Conflicting edits."

Lisa, I indulged in dark chocolate. It helped. But believe me, I can cuss my way onto that list mighty quickly.

Jodi, I swear I'm cursed with corkscrews and can openers. My mother has had the same swing-away can opener for 35 years and it works like a charm. I got myself one and it was on the fritz in two weeks.

Dana, where were you when I needed you? I'll keep your wine & cheese cure in mind.

Cheryl, you won't believe this, but I too have cleared wine off the ceiling. True story…
