28 Aug Eat your veggies – please!
I couldn’t figure out why my chicken souvlaki post got so many hits yesterday. Turns out Startcooking.com linked to my recipe. I was happy. Until I read the comment, “There are no vegetables in sight here…”
Then I was confused. I eat veggies. So I reread my post.
Hmmm. My recipe recommends you eat it with tzatziki, but surely you knew to add a side of Greek salad. Didn’t you?
I then checked my recipe archive. I’ve posted four (4) vegetable recipes and forty-four (44!?!) desserts. I’m flabbergasted. That’s an 11-to-1 ratio. Not exactly the balanced diet recommended by Canada’s Food Guide, mothers everywhere and people who care about their colons.
This calls for immediate action. While I rush out to shop for my daily five-to-ten, you whip up one of these healthy options.
- Jess Thomson (who spells her last name correctly!) makes Hot Tangy Beans over at Hogwash. They can be on your table in 10 minutes.
- If you can’t take the heat, Dana McCauley’s Tuscan Green Bean Salad might be more your style.
- Paris-based pastry chef, David Lebovitz, puts me to shame with a simple Marinated Tomato Salad.
- Pea lovers will drool over Cheryl Sternman Rule’s luminous Minty Peas.
- Julie O’Hara flirts with comfort food as she serves up a Healthy Bell Pepper and Zucchini Gratin.
Now if you’ll excuse me, there’s a head of broccoli somewhere with my name on it. And while I’m out, I must remember to pick up some butter for the birthday cake I’m making tomorrow, and pecans for the pralines and cream ice cream…

Posted at 10:41h, 28 AugustHi Christie,
Your Chicken Souvlaki looks really delicious!
My husband would consider your recipe PERFECT because there are no veggies on the skewer! 🙂
I am delighted we were able to introduce new visitors to your great site!
Cheers,

Posted at 12:49h, 28 AugustVegetables, shmegetables. OK, I don't really believe that, but you're doing everything right. Just don't try to integrate the veggies into your desserts, please. This past Sunday's New York Times magazine printed a recipe for Tomato-Preserve Ice Cream (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/24/magazine/24food-recipes-2.html?scp=1&sq=tomato%20preserve%20ice%20cream&st=cse). I'm sorry, but that's just wrong.

Posted at 13:42h, 28 AugustDana, thanks for the compliment. If I ate the way I blogged, I’d be six times the size.
Thanks for the shout out Kathy. My husband and yours would get along great from the sounds of it.
And Cheryl. Does that mean the asparagus frozen yogurt I was creating just for you won’t fly?
