Blueberry Bliss

You are not seeing things. Do not adjust your monitor. Yes, I’ve used this photo before. On Thursday. It drew so many compliments I thought I’d use it again with some clarifications.

One: I did not take this photo. I wish I did, but it was snapped by a Flickr user with the profile name of presta. I’m flattered you think I produced this, but credit goes to presta.

Two: Why yes, I do have a recipe for blueberry pancakes. Just add 1 cup of blueberries to my mother’s buttermilk pancake recipe. They could look this good, but since my extended family gobbles them as soon as they come out of the pan, I make no guarantees as to their stackability.

I don’t know if stackability is a real word. But I do know that if you eat like Michael Phelps you must swim like him or you will look like Homer Simpson. Perhaps your best bet is to stick to plain blueberries. Need motivation? Imagine digging into a bowl of these.

Saturday was the last day I could get locally grown blueberries at my farmers’ market. I bought a precious $6 pint, wishing more than anything that the price had tumbled just a bit. They are so lovely just as you’ve displayed them, eaten from a bowl, simply, out of hand. But $6/pint? That just hurts.

Cheryl, our season is a bit behind yours, but they’re no cheaper here. Berry picking is labour intensive so I can’t really complain.

Look at it this way. Three good chocolate truffles can ring up $6, but a pint of blueberries is healthier, far more filling and takes longer to eat.

    Feel better now?

You’re too right, Charmian. Too right. They really are worth it. And I wouldn’t want to pick them myself, so it makes sense that I’d pay someone else to do the dirty work. There, I do feel better!

(I’d also feel better if they were $4/pint, though. Is that so wrong?)

I was just at Longo’s and their produce department was a blueberry and damson plum extravaganza! I think that if bargains are to be had on blueberries that a Saturday morning trip to Longos will do the trick for those readers who are in the Toronto area.
